A Trip To The Art School Of Vallodolid, Spain.

Intro written by Ciara Eloise Nolan.

John Gibson of Martin- Hudson & Gibson Ltd takes several students of interior design (and related disciplines) under his wing each season as interns at his showroom in Sandycove, County Dublin.

But it doesn't stop there.

John recently spent a full week educating and inspiring interior design students in Valladolid, Spain!

Some of the fourteen topics covered during his week with the students were:
"Martin - Hudson & Gibson Ltd. - A Business"
"The World's First Interior Designer"
"Interior Design Throughout The Eras"
"Spanish Design In Dublin"
"International Design"

The feedback from the university's students and lecturers was quite overwhelming. If the beautifully hand made gifts are anything to go by, it is quite evident that the students were very fond of John and of his passion for interior design and it is clear that he made a fantastic, lasting impression with them.

Below are some pictures of the gifts hand made by the interior design students, followed by an extract from a blog which was written by one of the Interior Design lecturers- Teresa- at the college, praising John's work.

You can see the original blog post, in Spanish & in English here.

"Appointment with a Dubliner"

"What’s better than starting this academic year with a professional in interior design. John Gibson has taught us, and a lot, about something he knows perfectly. Who would say that he studied mathematics to later devote, with great taste and subtlety, to interior design. But, as he says, all knowledge is of value.

Let’s close our eyes for a moment to imagine him: a thin, restless, energetic man, with a vivacious look and a lively and a very Spanish sense of humour. He likes the activity, either physical like tennis, which is the sport he plays, or mental. He takes part in “go” championships, an ancient strategy game originated in China. We keep imagining: Irish, white beard of wisdom, kind of Renaissance man, open, communicative and adaptable. A last detail: his socks match his shirt. Those he was wearing last days surprised us because of their azure colour. He’s definitely a man of personality, an entrepreneur with clear ideas. In fact he’s dedicated to interior design over decades.

This week has been a first gift for teachers and students on their second year of Interior Design. We owe it to the Erasmus grants for entrepreneurs and teachers in Europe. Others will come for the rest of the studies at our school as there are always professionals available who, like John, love teaching.

In  John’s words: “I’ve been treated better than expected”. And this ... even if we joked with his “Lechaso“ , “Raibira“ and “Valadolid“. So far we have managed him to pronounce lechazo and Ribera (wine). He’s still struggling with the word Valladolid. Next time, John !

John’s tips

TIP 1 - “ How to be a good interior designer “ - To be a quality designer you must be trained in multiple facets and well in each of them, let emerge your talents, often hidden, and strive constantly to stand out from the rest. Only the best get their goal. Only the best!

TIP 2 - “ Serendipity “, how he likes this word! It refers to being in the right place and at the right time. If you’re given an opportunity  seize it, because no one knows when the next one will arrive. It is THE OPPORTUNITY in capital letters.

TIP 3 - “Networking” is another aspect that you should take care of. It consists of making good relations with customers and suppliers so that they publicize your work. If they speak positively of you, you will attract new ones.

TIP 4 - “ Improve your English “ - Speak English, practice all you can. This way you will better benefit from any working experience abroad. Be aware that John’s company, Martin -Hudson and Gibson Ltd, has hosted young interns from all over the world for 25 years" (Sic).

John sends a huge thanks to the students and lecturers at the Art School of Vallodolid, Spain for their wonderful hospitality.
